Wine:
This 2019 red Gevrey-Chambertin is the lifeblood of the estate, with no less than four hectares divided into two wines, the village cuvée and the vieilles vignes cuvée, depending on the age of the vines. Sylvie Esmonin has been making this wine for thirty years. It's a mosaic of 25 plots. Many around the Gevrey cemetery, La Combe de Lavaux, Rognard, les Crais, etc. It's not a fixed wine, because it depends on the vintage and the age of the vines. There are 50-year-old vines in this Gevrey village cuvée, but depending on the vintage, 50-year-old vines in a lighter vintage may be included in the Vieilles Vignes cuvée, depending on the condition of the grapes, whether they are mildewed or not. This wine is vinified in stainless steel vats, with 30 to 50% whole grapes depending on the vintage, followed by a one-year ageing period in 1/3 new barrels.
A prominent figure in Gevrey-Chambertin and an inspired winemaker, Sylvie Esmonin presides over a treasure trove of old vines, primarily on the legendary terroirs of the Côte de Nuits.
Practicing biodynamics in her vineyards, she continues to infuse her wines with incredible vitality, primarily vinifying with whole clusters, reviving the golden age of the 19th century when Pinot Noir resonated with a unique natural brilliance. This unparalleled style, forged over two decades, now allows the domain to stand at the highest level alongside the greatest references in Burgundy.
Despite its modest size, this estate is a sensation among enthusiasts who consistently find a unique soul here. Discovering it is necessary, but acquiring its wines remains a challenge.
